Trail Review: Orchard Loop Trail

Is it just me, or is a working farm one of the most glorious things we humans have ever invented? As such, the Orchard Loop Trail is by far the prettiest bike ride in the entire St. Clair County area. With hills that roll through apple orchards and Christmas trees, offering views of the countless pick-your-own produce patches, this trail leaves you satisfied in your heart while improving your cardio.

Is it just me, or is a working farm one of the most glorious things we humans have ever invented? As such, the Orchard Loop Trail is by far the prettiest bike ride in the entire St. Clair County area. As an offshoot of the MetroBikeLink Trail, the 4 mile trail begins near Mascoutah Ave. between the Belleville and College Stations. Winding its way through neighborhoods and rural fields, it starts to pick up elevation at the new Belle Valley School. After climbing “Alien Hill” (I don’t know if that’s it’s true name, but it’s what I’m calling it), it descends down into the orchards before finishing the ride at Eckert’s Farm.

Scenery: 5/5 stars

As I’ve already noted, this is the prettiest trail in St. Clair County. With lovely vistas across countless orchards and vegetable patches, there’s something inherently inspiring about watching so much nature work for the benefit of life.

The trail starts off Mascoutah Ave. through a long tunnel that used to be a junky trailer park. The bike trail is a much better use of the space, in my opinion. After that, it makes its way by apartments and cornfields before entering the domain of Belle Valley School. After winding around the sports fields, it climbs the hill past the observatory.

Beyond that, you’re in the domain of the orchards. Apple trees are everywhere in numerous varietals. At this point, you could take the rightward path to the Eckert’s campus or stay left to catch the marvelous views from the overpass across Green Mount Rd.

Cleanliness: 5/5 stars

With its secluded nature winding around mostly private property, a school and expensive neighborhoods, the trail offers little opportunity for your typical litterers.

Resources: 2/5 stars

Like the entire St. Clair County area, the resources here are limited to some food options and a DIY bike repair station. Said DIY station is not exactly on the trail, but a short minute away on the MetroBikeLink, and the food at Eckert’s, though delicious, can be a bit expensive.

Suggested Snack Stops:
Like mentioned, its Eckert’s. They offer a full grocery store, restaurant, pick-your-own produce, custard stand and cider tap. There is certainly something for everyone in every season.
